The working week vs 15 football matches

On Friday lunchtime I left the office saying to my workmates that I'd "be watching 20 hours of footy then turning round and coming back". Having done the maths, I've watched 10 games, at 95 minutes a pop - thus totalling a glorious 950 minutes and weighing in at just short of 16 hours. Somewhere in amongst this I have also ironed 7 shirts, visited a farm, cooked (and eaten) food, slept a bit and put a few odds and ends in the loft. All in all a decent effort - and special thanks must go out to Mrs Birch, for not throwing a big mard during this important time.

Since I last signed off:

  • Iceland held out to Argentina, and got their deserved draw. They are in a tough group, but are a decent and likeable team, definitely more twists and turns to come in Group D - certainly Croatia vs Argentina in the second round of game becomes a big big game (Thursday 7pm).
  • Peru, love them [see here for why], put in the performance of the tournament, with a display for pacey and gung-ho footy that we all just love. Denmark picked off a rare breakaway chance to shatter Peru's dreams and leave their hopes looking slim, which is a shame as they look like they could grace the tournament. 
  • Croatia beat a virtually non-existent Nigeria team 2-0. Nigeria looked like they were doing a 90 minute charade of the word 'lethargy'
  • Serbia (with a lot of recognisable names in their squad) beat Costa Rica in a relatively dull but kinda even encounter. 
  • Germany lost a game. Mexico were sublime, and played in a way not disimilar to Peru - gutsy and positive. I've been scouring the wall-chart and I think this situation gives England a chance to avoid Germany all the way to the final (assuming we win our group, someone else wins Germany's group and both teams were to progress!). Ok, too many if's but we can but dream.
  • Brazil flattered to deceive and basically announced themselves as this tournament's Liverpool. 

Tomorrow the real battle starts, trying to maintain a state of "latest score ignorance" in an office full of the best part of two hundred 25-45 year old [predominantly] men. Noise cancelling earphones anyone?

I am numb

The England match left me numbed. Unimpressive, uninspired, lacklustre – however the bottle of champagne I enjoyed with the game certainly took the edge off things. It seems that we, along with France and Italy are suffering some horrendous ‘anti-football’ affliction. If the game was less global then we could put it down to ‘a long hard season in the Premier league’ or ‘the difficulty of being motivated for national team games when the premier league pays so well’; but neither is valid. Neither is this jibulabulani ball business. The teams who pass to each other seem not to suffer. Poor selections and poor play has blighted us, and whilst lots of vitriol heads in the direction of Heskey, we’d do well to remember that the main culprits on Friday were Gerrard and Rooney for having zero patience on the ball and terrible control. Lampard wasn’t much better. At least Barry gave us some sort of stable platform to build from. I expect the introductions of Joe Cole and Jermain Defoe or Peter...

Famous for having a very ginger goatee in 1994. He also managed LA Galaxy, (yes THE galaxy), before getting fired after winning errrm, nothing. A fine CV in which to impart his wisdom. Welcome to ESPN's premier 'soccer' analyst for the next month here in the US. Day 3 thoughts

Not much time here so we're going to have to go with a quick fire round today: Continued my poor run of watching the 7:30am games. Best decision EVER. sounds like a stinker of a game, but a potentially horrible result.... last game frustration as the Slovenians park the bus awaits! Algeria game on Friday promises to be a goalkeeping masterclass.... could be a basketball score... Looks like Ghana for 2nd in Group B, were not spectacular but thought they played well enough sans Essien. Serbia's Nikola Zigic - oh dear. Looks like the love child of Gareth Barry and Peter Crouch, and plays like the latter. Great defensive clearance when it seemed easier to score... Somebody get Alex McLeish a stiff drink Well crap. We just saw the best team in the tournament and its the Germans.... Birchy, I wish I could report more on the reaction of the locals to the 1-1 draw, but I have been confined to the house.
