Extra time

Think you're right Birchy, fatigue is starting to set in on the blogosphere... which by no means correlates to my enjoyment of the world cup - far from it. I thought the quarters were all great:

  • Holland v Brazil: A frantic match and amazing eye opener as the greatest team on earth imploded the minute they conceded a freak goal. They say dogs look like their owners, and this Brazil team quickly mimicked their emotional jack in a box coach, completely lost the plot and lost their place in the tournament. Someone made Robinho wear a Man City shirt under his Brazil jersey in the second half also.
  • Uruguay v Ghana: There's not a single player who would have not done exactly what Suarez did in this game. However, I'm just glad the media didn't pick up on the fact that my hard earned cash was on Uruguay being eliminated at the quarter final stage (yes, I had thought it would be England beating them at this stage.... hmm), as this clearly was the final burden for Ghana that they couldn't shake. Ghana did well, and great to see the SA fans really get behind them.
  • Germany v Argentina: Maradonameter 1/10. No histrionics, no tantrums, no ball juggling. And actually, no coaching either. The man forgot he was in charge and thought he was in the stands cheering the team on.....and there was little to cheer. Highlight of the performance was Sergio Aguero (sp) keying himself up for getting onto the pitch for the biggest game of his career, likely visualising scoring the 2 goals needed to get his team back in the game.... only to be bear hugged in grief by the little one, who may or may not have been in tears of sorrow, as the Germans extended their lead. Not quite the Obama "Yes we can!" motivational encouragement! Oh, and yes, the Germans look like the best team at a finals for several years.... their only question mark is can they keep it up against Spain. They do however look like they're going to make my life miserable every two years for the next decade....
  • Spain v Paraguay: As expected, although I thought Paraguay were tactically very good - but clearly limited. Spain did just enough, although Casillas is looking dodgy to me so far... intriguing semi final set up

Ok, that's me caught up. Only 3 games (excluding the 3rd place game) to go.....

Final thought..... we have Ruud Gullit as a panellist on ESPN in the US. He was beside himself after the Brazil game.... I'm hoping ESPN show highlights of his hotel room after party...I suspect it was a long one....

Arriving late at the far post...........

Well, out from behind a rock I come. Like Batman responding to the spotlight over Gotham, the sight of Alexi Lalas relaxing on ESPN's swanky new World Cup set spouting 'knowledge' of the beautiful game immediately triggered me into action. A personal excitement for me is the returning punditry on this side of the pond of one Roberto Martinez. 4 years ago, I listened to this polite young man with light enthusiasm....now I find myself hanging onto every word from Bobby Brown Shoes. A supremely classy guy, just hoping for the "and Neymar is close to signing, which is phenonemal (Bobby's most used word - quite impressive for a Spanish native) " Sooo, what have I missed so far (Brazil own goal aside).... - Roy Hodgson in old man sunglasses - An amazing lack of planning from team England organizing a friendly in Florida at 5pm in June and being surprised as a thunderstorm - Scapegoating of a key England player (Rooney) before a ball is kicked in anger - Overplay...

Reflections

So another World Cup is coming to a close, and while recriminations, inquests and debriefs will continue - the distraction will stop and life goes on. Sometimes, almost guaranteed, that means dealing with heartbreak along the way. I for one hope Mr and Mrs Birchy have had their share and, the future has in store many more good times to balance out the tough. Wishing you both strength at this tough time. There's no great segue to get us back to the footie, but I talked about distraction and here is my distracting run down on all things Brazil, team by team, with omissions of those that didn't leave an impression :  Africa: Algeria weren't bad at all. Great game v Sth Korea and gave the Germans a run for their money. The rest made the squabbles for win bonuses the height of irony... Asia: Sth  Korea: pelted with toffees upon arrival home. Need I say more. I've forgotten what Japan did United States of Australia: plucky effort team, sum of parts blah blah..., could run all...

Kuddelmuddel

I was convinced the German team would recover emphatically. Their opening game was an aberration, and whilst they were poor defensively, they created enough chances to win a handful of games. So against a threat-less Sweden, I was sure normality would return. Yet Saturday night’s game so nearly turned the footballing world on its head. I think the only surprise when the ball tore into the net in the 95th minute was that it wasn’t an England keeper disconsolately picking the ball out of the net. Kudos to Germany, back from the brink. If they solve their defensive Kuddelmuddel (one of their great words that means a phrase “unstructured mess, chaos or hodgepodge”) then they will yet again be a force to be reckoned with. Speaking of forces; er, England?! None of this cagey group stage malarkey going on. Boom, into the last 16 with the tournament just 9 days old. Kane is off down to Timpsons for some golden coloured shoe polish. What a result and what a great performance, admittedly...
